A few things worth knowing first

Start with a semi-modular before buying your first rack. The Behringer Neutron, Moog DFAM, or Make Noise 0-Coast are patchable synthesizers that work without a case. They let you learn synthesis, patching logic, and CV concepts before you sink $500 into a rack and a pile of modules you're not sure about yet.

Plan your whole system before buying the first module. Eurorack is notorious for incremental spending — one module reveals a gap, and two months later you're $3000 in. Cases & Power

If you're going the Eurorack route, your case is the infrastructure everything else lives in. A Eurorack case does two things: holds modules in HP (horizontal pitch) rails, and powers them via a ±12V bus. Most starter cases are 84–104 HP, fitting 8–12 small modules. Do NOT buy a cheap unregulated power supply — noise in the power rail ends up in your audio. Spend money here, not on the cheapest possible case.

Oscillators

The oscillator is the voice of your system — it generates the raw waveforms that every other module then shapes, filters, and envelopes into sound. Patch Cables

Beginners get pressured to buy a lot of stuff that doesn't help them play better. Here's what we'd skip on day one.

  • A dedicated mixer module — Mix your oscillators in your DAW or through a standalone mixer until you understand exactly what you're combining and why.
