Your first epoxy river table pour
A live-edge slab with a glowing epoxy river sounds complex, but the real skill is sequencing: mold, seal, pour, cure, sand. Get the sequence right once and you'll build tables for life.

An epoxy river table is the most-searched DIY woodworking project on YouTube for good reason. The combination of live-edge wood and glowing colored resin looks like it requires either expensive tools or years of woodworking experience. It requires neither. What it requires is following a precise sequence and not improvising on the parts that matter.
This guide covers your first build from wood sourcing through the final polish. A coffee table is the right size for a first project — it uses about one gallon of epoxy and fits in a standard garage. Once you’ve done a coffee table, the jump to a dining table is straightforward.
Get the wood first, everything else second
The wood slab is the most variable part of the build, and you can’t plan the mold until you have it in hand.
What you’re looking for: Two book-matched live-edge slabs (halves of the same log cut to mirror each other), or a single slab with a natural void you’ll use as the river channel. Either works. Live-edge walnut is the classic choice — the dark grain contrasts beautifully with most epoxy colors. Maple works well for bright, saturated pigments.
Where to find slabs: Forget Amazon for this. Local sawmills are the right source — call ahead and visit on a Saturday morning. Lumber yards that carry hardwood will often have live-edge inventory. Facebook Marketplace from tree services (who often have fresh-cut slabs they’d rather sell than dispose of) is consistently the cheapest source. Expect to pay $60-150 for a coffee table blank in walnut; maple and cherry run 20-30% less.
The one thing to check on-site: Moisture content. Fresh-cut wood needs to dry before it can be used — “green” wood will continue shrinking after you pour and can crack the epoxy. Ask for kiln-dried stock, or check with a moisture meter (they’re cheap to rent). Target under 8% moisture content.
Build the mold right and the rest is much easier
The mold contains the liquid epoxy while it cures. It’s made from melamine-coated particle board — the white laminate surface that epoxy won’t bond to. You buy this at any hardware store for about $20.
The mold construction sequence:
- Cut melamine boards for the base and four walls
- Assemble with screws (the epoxy won’t get into the screws; they’re outside the pour area)
- Place your wood slabs in the mold with the gap between them forming the river channel
- Level everything carefully with a spirit level — uncured epoxy is liquid and will find every slope
- Seal all interior seams with silicone caulk and let it fully cure (24 hours)
- Apply Mann Ease Release 200 mold release spray to every melamine surface that epoxy will contact. Let it dry 10 minutes before pouring
The seal coat: Before the river pour, brush a thin coat of your deep-pour epoxy onto all exposed wood surfaces inside the mold. This seals the grain and prevents air trapped in the wood from bubbling up through your river layer during the main cure. Let this seal coat reach a tacky (not fully cured) state — about 4-6 hours — before the main pour.
Choosing your color and mixing the pigment
This is where most builders spend too much time overthinking. Pick one color scheme, test it, and commit.
Mica powders are the most forgiving starting point. They’re metallic, opaque, and easy to control: a pinch produces dramatic color in a quart of resin. Start with far less than you think looks right in the mixing cup — the color intensifies significantly as the epoxy cures and clears.
A few combinations that photograph consistently well:
- Ocean look: teal + white mica, layers poured in sequence
- Classic blue river: cobalt blue + small amount of black for depth
- Geode/abstract: multiple colors poured side by side and manipulated with a heat gun
Mix your pigment into the resin portion before adding the hardener. This gives you time to get the color right without triggering the cure clock.
The pour: what to do in the first 30 minutes
You have a window of about 30 minutes after the pour is complete where the resin is still liquid enough to manipulate. Use it for bubble removal only — this is not the time to add more color or stir.
Bubble removal: Pass a heat gun or propane torch 6-8 inches above the surface in slow, even sweeps. The heat causes surface tension to collapse the bubbles. Do two or three passes, waiting a few minutes between each. You’re not trying to eliminate every tiny bubble — just the visible surface ones. Small bubbles deep in the pour will rise and pop on their own.
After 30 minutes, leave the pour alone. Cover it with a dust-free enclosure (cardboard works, just don’t let it touch the epoxy surface) and let it cure at 70-80°F for 72 hours without disturbing it.
The polishing sequence: where the table becomes the table
At 72 hours, demold carefully and flip the piece onto sawhorses. You’ll see an opaque, slightly rough surface — this is normal. What’s underneath is a glass table.
The sequence matters and cannot be rushed:
- 220 grit: Flatten the entire surface, including any high spots where epoxy pooled at the wood-epoxy interface. Wet sand with a sanding block for even pressure.
- 400 grit: Remove the 220 scratches. The surface will still look opaque.
- 800 grit: The surface starts to show depth.
- 1500 grit: Wet sand. You can see the color beginning to emerge.
- 3000 grit: Wet sand. The surface looks close to finished but still a bit hazy.
- Polishing compound: Apply to a foam buffing pad and work in circles. A random orbital polisher at low speed transforms hazy to glass in 10-15 minutes.
At this point, you have a sanded river table surface. If you want a truly glass-smooth finish (you do), pour a thin layer of table-top epoxy (Pro Marine or similar) over the whole surface at 1/8 inch. This levels any remaining micro-scratches and gives the final mirror look. Let it cure another 24 hours, then attach legs.
The one mistake that ruins first builds
Temperature drift during cure. If you pour at 75°F and your garage drops to 55°F overnight, the cure slows dramatically and often stalls out — leaving a permanently tacky surface. The only fix is heat. If your workspace can’t hold 70°F for 72 hours, either run a space heater with a thermostat, or wait for summer.
The other common mistake: using table-top epoxy for the river pour. The packaging looks similar, the names are confusing, and the consequences of mixing them up are expensive. If the label doesn’t say “deep pour” or give a maximum pour depth greater than 1 inch, it’s not the right product for the river layer.
What to build after the first table
A coffee table first build teaches you everything: mold construction, pigment ratios, bubble technique, the polishing sequence, and how your specific workspace affects cure. The second build goes twice as fast.
Most builders move to a dining table (larger slab, 2-3 gallon pour) or a shelf/console next. Some get into resin art, ocean tables, or geode work with multiple poured layers. The tools and techniques transfer directly.
