FAQ
Common questions
How much does it cost to start paintball?
A solid mechanical marker, thermal mask, HPA tank, and electronic hopper runs $200-400. Paint is a separate per-day cost: fields typically charge $40-80 for 500 paintballs, and beginners shoot 300-600 per session. Budget $50-80 for your first field day on top of gear.
What's the difference between woodsball and speedball?
Woodsball is played in natural terrain with trees and cover, usually in scenario formats with objectives and longer games. Speedball is played on symmetrical fields with inflatable bunkers, fast-paced and competitive. Woodsball is the better starting format; speedball rewards players who've already developed shooting accuracy and communication.
Do I need HPA or can I start with CO2?
CO2 works fine for mechanical markers in moderate temperatures. It's the cheaper entry ($20 tank vs $60-80 for HPA). The problems: CO2 pressure drops as the tank empties and nearly disappears below 50°F, and CO2 will immediately damage any electronic marker's solenoid. If you think you might go electronic, start on HPA.
Can I rent gear and try before I buy?
Yes, and you should. Most fields offer full rental packages (marker, mask, hopper, tank, and a bag of paint) for $25-50 per day. One rental session is worth more than an hour of reading gear reviews. Know what format you like before you spend $300 on a setup.
Does paintball hurt?
Yes, but less than you'd think. A paintball hit through clothing feels like a sharp sting, not unlike a rubber band snap. Neck hits and hand hits without protection hurt more. At field-legal velocities (under 300 fps) with proper clothing, the sting fades in seconds. The anticipation is usually worse than the hit.
What's the velocity limit and why does it matter?
Most fields cap at 280-300 fps. Above that, paintballs cause real injury and are more likely to break on impact in ways that can sting through clothing. You'll chronograph your marker at the field's chrono station before every game. Don't skip this step; exceeding the limit gets you removed from play.
